Listserv

The Omaha System LISTSERV® was developed and is maintained by Joseph T. Burley, RN, MNEd at the University of Florida College of Nursing. As of January, 2008, the Listserv has more than 700 members from the USA, Andorra, Argentina, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Spain, Taiwan, and United Kingdom. Typically, two to four messages are posted on the Listserv each month. Please encourage others to join the Listserv and participate.

To join the Listserv:

  1. Send an email to listserv@lists.ufl.edu to subscribe. Leave the Subject BLANK--do not type anything.
  2. Type the following statement in the message section of your email, using this EXACT format:
subscribe omaha-l first name last name
    Example: subscribe omaha-l joe burley
NOTE: Type the letter l, not the number 1, after the hyphen in omaha-l and use spaces and caps as indicated in the directions and example.
  3. Send your message.
  4. You will receive an email asking you to confirm your request to subscribe (subject says "Command confirmation request"). Follow the instructions contained in the email to confirm your request. If you do not follow the instructions, you will not be subscribed.
NOTE: If you do not receive the confirmation request, or are having problems subscribing, send an email to Joe Burley describing your problems.
  5. After confirming your request to subscribe, you will receive another email that says "You are now subscribed to the OMAHA-L list".

To send (post) a message to the Listserv:

  1. Send an email to OMAHA-L@lists.ufl.edu with a short subject and your message in the regular message box. Include your name and contact information with the message. NOTE: Please do NOT send messages with attachments.
  2. You may post a message in both English and another language; the number of Listserv members who speak more than one language is increasing rapidly.
  3. When your message is posted, readers will see [OMAHA-L] preceding the subject you typed. That helps readers identify messages as legitimate Omaha System Listserv messages.
  4. If you want to reply or comment about someone else’s message and share that reply with everyone on the list, click Reply or Reply All. NOTE: You will see OMAHA-L@lists.ufl.edu in the "To" box if you are sending to the entire list.
  5. Do NOT use Reply or Reply All if you want to send a private message. To send a private message, make certain just one person’sname is in the "To" line and OMAHA-L@lists.ufl.edu is not there.
  6. Usually your message will be posted in several days. The Listserv is moderated, and some messages, especially spam, are deleted and do not appear on the Listserv.
  7. You will not receive a copy of the message you sent. To check if it has been sent, click on archives. If your message does not appear within a week, re-send it and send a message to Joe Burley asking for assistance.

To view previous messages, see the Listserv archives.

To change your email address, follow the "join the Listserv" instructions above using your new email address. If you do not join with your new address you will no longer be on the Listserv.

Your spam filter may block Listserv messages. To receive messages, ask your Internet service provider (ISP) or IT support staff to accept messages from listserv@lists.ufl.edu and omaha-l@lists.ufl.edu. You may also add those email addresses to your email Address Book or Safe Senders list to ensure delivery.

To unsubscribe/sign off from the Listserv:

  1. Send an email to listserv@lists.ufl.edu to unsubscribe.
  2. Put "signoff Omaha-l" (without quotes) in the message section of your email. Leave the Subject BLANK--do not type anything.
NOTE: Type the letter l, not the number 1, after the hyphen in omaha-l and use spaces and caps as indicated in the directions and example.
  3. Send your message.
  4. You will receive a confirmation within a few days that you have been removed from the Listserv.

The purpose of the Listserv is to share information. Consider sending messages to the Listserv about the following:

  • What questions do you have about the Omaha System after you read the information on this Web site?
  • Are you scheduling Omaha System refresher sessions for your colleagues; increasing the reliability, validity, and usability of your data; or improving the use of your software?
  • What strategies have you used successfully to teach, implement, and maintain accurate and consistent use?
  • Are you using outcomes data to help your board members, funding sources, accreditors and surveyors, and general public understand your successes?
  • How are you solving the clinical data-information puzzle?
  • Are you in touch with others in your area employed in similar and different practice, education, and/or research settings? Collaboration across settings is a great way to increase the extent and quality of Omaha System use.
  • Are you organizing a relevant conference, meeting or workshop? Speaking or sharing a poster? Tell readers how to obtain more information.
  • Have you written a relevant article or chapter? Read one that others may find useful?
  • Have you released new Omaha System software or a significant upgrade? Do you have news to share about issues related to the Omaha System that will impact your customers?
  • What announcements or news can you share?
